# Install

> Install Keel with npm and check that it works.

## Requirements

Node.js **20.19 or newer**. Check with:

```bash theme={null}
node --version
```

If it's missing or older, install the current LTS from [nodejs.org](https://nodejs.org), or with a version manager such as `nvm` or `fnm`.

## Install

```bash theme={null}
npm install -g @nouisi/keel
```

Then check it:

```bash theme={null}
keel --version
keel
```

`keel` on its own opens the [Keel shell](/guides/the-shell). Type `exit` (or press Ctrl+D) to leave it.

> [!WARNING]
>
> If `npm install -g` fails with `EACCES`, your Node install wants administrator rights for global packages. Install Node through a version manager instead of using `sudo`.

## Tab completion

Keel completes commands, people, projects, refs and dates when you press Tab. Turn it on for your shell, then open a new terminal:

```bash zsh (macOS default) theme={null}
echo 'eval "$(keel completion zsh)"' >> ~/.zshrc
```

```bash bash theme={null}
echo 'eval "$(keel completion bash)"' >> ~/.bashrc
```

Inside the Keel shell, Tab completion works without this.

## Update or uninstall

```bash theme={null}
npm install -g @nouisi/keel@latest   # update
npm uninstall -g @nouisi/keel        # remove (your data in ~/.keel stays)
```
